Denture Cleaning and Care In Budd Lake

If you wear dentures in Budd Lake, it’s easy to believe the chore of regular oral hygiene is over. After all, the primary goal of taking care of your mouth is ensuring the health of your teeth. If you no longer have teeth and are using dentures, this should mean oral and dental care is not as big an issue.

This is only partially correct, however. While taking care of your teeth is no longer part of your oral hygiene regimen, maintaining the health of your gums and keeping your dentures clean is still crucial for overall oral health. There are a few things you still need to do if you want to take proper care of your gums and your dentures.

One significant advantage of cleaning dentures that normal teeth don’t have is that they can be removed, washed, and rinsed. After eating, it’s a good idea to rinse out dentures and then, as with regular teeth, brush them remove food.

Despite being artificial, plaque and eventually tartar may still build up on dentures. This means that dentures still need to be cleaned, just like regular teeth, and this can still be done with a toothbrush. When cleaning your dentures, make sure that you use special toothpaste designed for dentures, rather than regular fluoridated toothpaste for normal teeth.

HANDLING DENTURES

Dentures are delicate, so if you’re removing them for cleaning, keep in mind that they are moist and may be slippery. To prevent damage, set a towel on the sink to absorb impact or fill the sink itself with water to soften falls. While it is not painful to you if your dentures should become damaged, this will affect their appearance and possible their performance, so treat them with care.

KEEP DENTURES MOIST

Even though they are artificial, dentures still work at their best when they are kept moist. This isn’t a problem when they are in your mouth, doing their job. But whenever you remove them, such as when you go to sleep, ensure they are kept in a cleaning solution or some other liquid to prevent them from drying out.

REST YOUR GUMS

It’s not a good idea to wear your dentures all the time. Your gums need rest. By putting your dentures away for the night when you won’t be speaking and eating, you can keep your gums healthy and comfortable.

SEE YOUR DENTIST

Just because you aren’t looking after a full set of teeth, doesn’t mean you can’t benefit from a visit to the dentist. Changes in your gums can be detected, and adjustments to your dentures can be made by a professional. Regular visits ensure both your gums and your dentures are in prime condition.  Contact the team at Gentle Family Dentistry today.
